MUNICH: The new BMW 8 Series Coupe is coming.

Long expected to make a comeback, it was finally confirmed by BMW AG Harald Krüger at the company's annual general meeting here today.

He said the 8 Series design study would be presented at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on May 26, providing an exclusive look ahead to the grand tourer's world premiere in 2018, probably at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is an elegance competition for classic and vintage cars that takes place every year near the picturesque Lake Como.

“The BMW 8 Series Coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our line-up – a slice of pure automotive fascination,” says Krüger, looking ahead to the new model. “The 8 Series Coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe.”

The Mercedes S-Class Coupe rival is expected to also include an M8 to compete with the likes of Ferrari.

The E31 8 Series was introduced from 1989 and had a 10-year run before it was discontinued because it did not meet new emission regulations.

The original 8 Series was powered by either a V8 or V12 engine.
