KUALA LUMPUR: BMW Group Malaysia will start selling the new X4 from June 1 following its launch here last night.

Available in one grade only, the locally assembled X4 xDrive30i M Sport is tentatively priced at RM380,000 (on the road, without insurance).

This year is turning out to be an SUV-heavy season for BMW Malaysia following the debut of the latest generation of its bestselling 3 Series in March. The X4 is kicking off the X model rollout; yet to come are the new X5 and X2 M35i, which were previewed at the X4 launch.

Also set for arrival is its biggest SUV yet, the all-new X7, and the facelifted X1, which was only unveiled in Munich on Wednesday.

The X4's 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine produces 252hp with peak torque of 350Nm. It has a top speed of 240kph and can do the century sprint in 6.3 seconds. Combined fuel consumption and combined CO2 emission are rated at 7.8 litres per 100km and 178g/km respectively.

An 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission enables faster gear changes and comes with shift paddles on the steering wheel along with a Launch Control function.

The second-gen X4 stands out with its coupe-like roofline, athletic curves and distinct M Sport characteristics. It features muscular, flared wheel housings and has a distinctive M Sport aerodynamic optics, 20” M Double-spoke wheels, and M Sport Brakes.

This is a larger X4 now, with a 2,864mm (+54mm) wheelbase for the 4,752mm-long (+81mm), 1,918mm-wide (+37mm) and 1,621mm-tall (-3mm) body.

It sports a bigger kidney grille with active shutters but unlike in the X5 and X7, is not a one-piece element. It features sportier proportions with athletic shoulders and slim, 3D wrap-around taillights with their three-dimensional styling.

BMW says that the X4's chassis has a higher percentage of light-weight aluminium combined with high-strength steel to reduce the vehicle’s overall weight by up to 50kg while aerodynamics have been optimised to a low 0.30Cd (drag coefficient) and a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution as well as a lower centre of gravity.
