Bringing your e-bike on holiday: Carrier options for the car

STUTTGART: Bringing your bike along when you go on holidays requires extra logistical planning, even when travelling with your own car.

That's particularly true for e-bikes, which are significantly heavier than conventional bikes.

German industry magazine Auto Straßenverkehr has rated three bike carrier systems for cars, from conventional roof racks to hitch-mounted cargo carriers.

Roof racks: The most affordable version is a bike rack attached to the roof of the car, according to the experts. If the car already has a roof rack, then all you need are the rails to hold a bike. These cost between €20 and €100 in Germany (up to RM460), according to the magazine.

However, some muscular strength will be needed as e-bikes typically weigh around 30kg.

You also need to make sure that the roof can take the weight. Two electric bikes could exceed the maximum load allowed whereas light racing bikes shouldn't be a problem.

Another point to consider is that bikes on the roof will affect the car's handling in corners and crosswinds, and also lead to increased fuel consumption.

Rear carriers: With a price range between €50 and €250 (up to RM1,150), rear carriers that are mounted on the tailgate or boot are somewhat more expensive, but more suitable for heavier bikes.

The Auto Straßenverkehr testers recommend ensuring that the bike carrier is suitable for your particular car model before buying. Otherwise, there is a risk of scratching the paintwork.

Advantages of rear-mounted bike carriers include that the bikes are out of the wind and can be easily secured. On the other hand, opening the boot is more difficult.

Hitch-mounted cargo carriers: According to the testers, the most convenient solution for heavy e-bikes is a platform that is mounted on the head of the trailer hitch and locked there with a clamping lever.

However, this is also the most expensive transport option from €150 to €400 (up to RM1,839), especially if the trailer coupling has to be retrofitted.
