DETROIT: Cadillac is filling a big hole in its model line-up with a handsome SUV designed to take on successful German luxury crossover metal such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.

The wraps came off the new utility just ahead of this week's Detroit motor show (January 14-27). The XT6 marks a new look for Cadillac featuring slim, horizontal headlamps.

The new model will go on sale in the United States this summer and reach Europe in 2020. It comes as a sports or premium model.

Analysts said the XT6 is a key element in the strategy of General Motors subsidiary Cadillac to reframe the brand's after sales dipped at the end of 2018.

The XT6 slots into the range as the little brother of the giant Escalade and like that model it can be bought with three rows of seats for up to seven passengers inside. The third row folds into the floor at the flick of switch.

The 5.5-metre XT6 gets a powerful 3.6-litre engine and can be ordered with either front-wheel drive or permanent four-wheel drive. It is shod as standard with 20-inch wheels.

No performance or fuel consumption figures have yet been released.

The top model gets innovative night vision technology and both versions are built around a suite of driver assistance systems. There is a high level of connectivity with two USB ports in every row, 15-watt wireless charging and 4G LTE
