Cameras on Penang bridge not speed traps, operator assures motorists

GEORGE TOWN: There are no Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras on the second Penang bridge contrary to what has been claimed in a social media post which was widely shared.

The ‘speed trap’ cameras featured in the post are actually used by the bridge concessionaire Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) to collect data for internal research and not to penalise motorists.

The JKSB corporate communications department clarified in a statement on its Facebook page that the cameras are part of an Intelligent Transportation System which it had implemented to monitor traffic behaviour and speed of vehicles travelling on the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge.

It stated that it had implemented the system to improve its traffic management in the near future.

It stressed that data collected from the cameras would be used by JKSB for its internal research, especially for safety purposes and not to penalise users.

JKSB, however, advised motorists to always observe the speed limit and not exceed 80kph while travelling on the 24km-long bridge.

The concessionaire welcomed motorists to contact its hotline (1300-30-2828) or email (aduan@jambatankedua.com.my) for accurate information of the bridge.

A recent post circulating on social media with a picture of cameras attached to the signboards along the bridge had caused concern among some people who were worried that they might have been caught speeding by the AES.
