ONTARIO: A 22-year-old driver in Canada is now facing charges after falsely claiming that he had Covid-19 to avoid being issued a traffic ticket.

Ontario Provincial Police caught the truck driver (name withheld) on a highway on Tuesday. They had flagged him down because of the vehicle’s illegal licence plates, CTV News reported on the same day.

When the officers called paramedics to the scene, the driver then confessed he did not have Covid-19.

Following the incident, police charged the driver with obstruction of an officer under the province’s Quarantine Act for making a false or misleading statement to an officer. According to the report, the driver also faces charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

Authorities noted as well that the driver only had a G1 licence.

People with a G1 licence may only drive cars, vans or small trucks with an “accompanying fully licensed driver with at least four years driving experience, ” according to Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation. – Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network
