Car clubs: We aim to build ties, not hold street races

PETALING JAYA: The main purpose of joining car clubs is to develop stronger relations among members and not to organise street races, said car clubs.

“The road is not for racing or reckless driving. It is for everyone to drive safely,” said Khairul Nizam, who is a member of the MyviClub (MyviC).

Khairul, a court interpreter, said his club’s activities were limited to tea gatherings, dinner outings and charitable activities.

“We keep ourselves updated on the club. We really don’t do much else than socialise, and so incidents involving other car club members tarnish our image,” he said, adding that his club had so far organised track meets in Malacca and Pasir Gudang.

“This gave our members a chance to race without harming others,” he said, adding that members were warned not to get involved in street racing.

Those found to be involved, he said, would be warned and have their memberships stripped if they repeated such activities.

Rozar motorsports president T. Nilal Raj said most car clubs did not allow racing.

“We attend auto shows, car club gatherings and events such as blood donation drives and relief efforts.

“Our primary agenda is to be part of auto shows because we are into modifying our cars,” he said, adding that his club had never organised racing events.

“Legal races are okay. In fact, if more can be organised at an affordable rate, I think we will be able to curb illegal street racing.

Bukit Aman traffic chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said racing on public roads is illegal, even if it is held at dead-end streets or secluded highway stretches.

“We receive public information on street racing on a regular basis and efforts to curb these activities are an ongoing affair,” he said.

He was responding to claims by an ex-racer to The Star that her car club did not encourage group racing but organised drag races in secluded areas or roads with dead ends and not where other vehicles were present.

SAC Mohd Fuad said the traffic police had almost completed their investigations into the cause of Saturday’s accident on the DUKE highway.
