Car wash operator charged with insulting JPJ officer

GEORGE TOWN: A businessman claimed trial in a magistrate's court here for outraging the modesty of a Road Transport Department (JPJ) officer by using foul language.

Syed Amen Jainul Abdin, who runs a car wash business, was charged with outraging the modesty of JPJ officer Asymal Mansur, 41, by uttering offensive words outside the lobby of the JPJ Batu Uban branch in Gelugor here at around 4.45pm on Nov 26.

The offence under Section 509 of the Penal Code is punishable by a five-year prison sentence, fine, or both.

Lawyer Rosli Ismail, who represented Syed Amen, 45, sought a lower bail amount, citing that his client is not a flight risk.

Deputy public prosecutor Noor Azura Zulkiflee proposed a RM4,000 bail.

Magistrate L. Umma Devi granted a bail of RM3,000 in one surety, and fixed Feb 17 next year for mention pending the submission of documents.

An angry-looking Syed Amen, punched his fist into the air as press photographers took his photos outside the courtroom after he was charged today.

A six-minute video of a man rambling about being allegedly mistreated at the Batu Uban JPJ branch over his car's road tax renewal went viral on Tuesday.

In the video, the man ranted over how he could not renew his road tax last month.
