NANJING: Hot on the heels of its electric SUV concept car, the Chinese electric car start-up Byton has offered a sneak peek of its much-awaited second model.

The large saloon is due to hit the streets in China in 2020 and will make its way to the rest of the world soon afterwards, the company announced at the CES Asia electronics trade fair in Shanghai.

The new concept car, which features a long hood and a steep tail, measures just under five metres in length and has a purely electric-powered engine. It also has sensors on its roof and sides to offer the possibility of autonomous driving, which, according to Byton CEO Carsten Breitfeld, remains a key priority for the company.

Byton has yet to offer any data on the technical specs for the newly unveiled model. Even so, the drive options are not expected to differ much from the SUV model.

As such, there will likely be electric motors with 71 or 95 kWh, making for a range between 400 and 520 kilometres, and an 80-per-cent electric charge in 30 minutes at a fast-charging station. Likewise, the SUV’s price tag of less than 46,500 dollars is probably a useful guide for the saloon.

With its second car, Byton has also introduced its own company nomenclature. As a digital-oriented brand, it relies on digital terminology and will launch its models under the name "Byte". The saloon will be known as the K-byte, while the SUV should hit markets as the M-byte, the manufacturer says.
