STUTTGART: The new Maybach version of Mercedes-Benz sports utility is set to be one of the best-smelling mudpluggers of all time.

Owners who recline in the Maybach's sumptuous seats will be treated to an exquisite fragrance based on a blend of native Asian flowering osmanthus plants, leather and spicy tea, say the makers.

Mercedes-Benz has already used designer fragrances for the flagship S Class limousine, but the Maybach is one of the first high-riding luxury cars to get the olfactory makeover. The scent is unique to the model.

The scented cockpit is in marked contrast to the mighty look of the Maybach SUV which wowed the crowds at the Pebble Beach automotive event in California earlier this year.

The Maybach features a huge grille of vertical slats topped by the brand's "MM" mascot along with unique headlight and tail-light graphics. Much chrome has been added and there are exclusive wheels to set the Maybach apart from the Mercedes-Benz GLS on which it is based.

The Maybach's interior is truly regal, with rose-gold, wood rim and embedded LEDs on nearly every surface. Power is likely come from a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 mated to an all-wheel-drive system through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Due to be built in the US state of Alabama, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is rumoured to cost around US$200,000 (RM839,000).

The Maybach marks Mercedes-Benz's foray into the world of ultra-luxury SUVs and it will square up to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and the Bentley Bentayga.

Like its rivals, the Maybach will seldom venture into muddy terrain, although road testers say its platform sibling, the GLS, shows remarkable off-road ability for such a bulky car.
