TOKYO: Nissan and Toyota have announced the temporary suspension of production in the US while Toyota has added Canada and Mexico to their list.

Nissan's production halt in the US starts today until April 6 in order to boost containment efforts amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Japanese carmaker also announced that there are currently no confirmed cases at any of its facility. However,  areas deemed business-essential will continue to operate with enhanced safety measures.

As for Toyota, its manufacturing facilities in Canada, Mexico and the US will be closed from March 23 to 24 with production resuming on March 25.

During this time, the Japanese carmaker's service parts depots and vehicle logistics centres will continue operating.

The company announced that the temporary closure is to help ensure the health and safety of its employees while anticipating a decline in market demand related to the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The company will conduct a thorough cleaning at all of its manufacturing facilities during the shutdown.

Meanwhile, it will allow its employees to prepare and adjust their family plans in relation to regional directives to school closures as they continue to monitor the situation and take action as and when needed.
