Face fallout if you let unlicensed riders use your bike

KUALA LUMPUR: If you own a motorcycle and allow someone without a licence to ride it, beware, your machine could be seized and put up for auction.

Federal traffic police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said the owner of the motorcycle and the rider would both be issued summonses.

“We will seize the machine and if the owner does not come forward to claim it within three months, we will auction it off,” he told reporters at Bukit Aman yesterday when announcing a crackdown on errant motorcyclists.

He said motorcycles made up about 60% of the 25.1 million vehicles on the road this year.

“They were involved in 63% of all road fatalities last year.

“Of the 6,674 fatalities recorded last year, 4,179 were motorcyclists and pillion riders,” SAC Mohd Fuad said.

Police would also conduct operations at schools.

“If students are caught riding motorcycles without a licence, we will bring them in and call their parents.

“As parents you have a responsibility to make sure your child does not ride a motorcycle without a licence,” he said.

On the recent Ops Selamat this Chinese New Year, SAC Mohd Fuad said the police would re-evaluate their performance to reduce accidents.

“This year, accidents increased by 18.8% (17,632) over the corresponding period last year. Fatal accidents increased by 22.4% (186).

“We have compiled our data and found that most of the fatal accidents occurred between 6am and 10am (33 cases) and between 10pm and 2am (29),” he said, adding that the police would focus on these times to bring down the numbers.
