Ferrari announces June 24 launch of 'revolutionary' car. All bets on a V6 plug-in hybrid

MARANELLO: Ferrari has released a short video teasing the June 24 launch of what it calls a "revolutionary Prancing Horse".

The wordings suggest the new Ferrari model to be a plug-in hybrid. And possibly with a V6 powerplant.

Spyshots of the McLaren Artura challenger are already out, showing the camouflaged car to have a sleek design similar to the SF90 Stradale. It features narrow headlights and quad taillights with exhaust pipes believed to be centrally located in the rear.

Ferrari has done hybrid cars before with its first being the LaFerrari in 2013. Plug-in hybrids are the current trend with the SF90 Stradale/Spider (already available in Malaysia) producing almost 1,000hp from a turbo V8 mated to three electric motors.

It is only natural to move downline and offer a Baby Ferrari V6 that is relatively cheaper to attract new customers — like women and young people — that Ferrari wants to woo next to diversify its customer base.

The V6 engine was originally announced in September 2018 during the company's Capital Markets Day. FerrariChat forum members seemed to agree the new engine could be a V6. Some observers, however, think the new Ferrari would be based on the 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 Nettuno mill of the Maserati MC20, which makes 621hp. But it isn't confirmed until the real McCoy shows up on June 24.

If indeed the Baby Ferrari is using the MC20 engine — modified to work in a plug-in hybrid format with one electric motor — then we could be looking at output that is in excess of 700hp to 750hp.

The car might even sport an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission relaying power to the back wheels.

Just last month, Ferrari rolled out the V12-powered 812 Competizione and its drop-top sibling to the world.
