Fiat 124 Spider back on US soil in 50th anniversary year

DETROIT: The iconic Fiat roadster is returning to US showrooms after 30 years away, with sales of the model to start later this month.

The first shipments of the new 2017 Fiat 124 Spider have arrived in the US via Baltimore and San Diego in advance of North American sales opening later in the month, automobile group FIAT has announced.

Built on a shared platform with the famous Mazda MX-5 (which won World Car of the Year earlier in 2016), the convertible 124 Spider uses its own 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder engine for 160hp and 250Nm of torque.

Double-wishbone front suspension, rear multi-link suspension, tuned electric-power steering, blind-spot monitoring, parking assistance, and rear cross path detection are also features of the 2+2 seater roadster.

The original Fiat 124 Spider, was first introduced to the US in 1968 with its original run of sales ending in 1985.

After a 1966 unveiling at the Turin Motor Show, 2016 marks the vehicle's 50th anniversary.
