FIM Racing Homologation Programme for helmets comes into force

By CARSIFU | 4 June 2019

BERNE (Switzerland): As of June 3, after the combined efforts and collaboration between all main stakeholders over three years (since July 2016), the FIM Racing Homologation Programme for helmets (FRHP) has finally come into force for Grand Prix and Superbike racing.

The aim of the programme was to improve riders’ head protection and to respond to the need for a more objective evaluation of the safety performance of protective helmet systems for racing.

The FRHP has been established, with the collaboration of the helmet manufacturers, in order to define a new test standard that goes above and beyond existing ones (e.g. UN ECE 22.05, Snell M2015, JIS T8133).

In addition to Grand Prix and Superbike racing adopting the new standard with immediate effect, it will be mandatory for all circuit racing competitions to adhere to the new FIM homologation process as from their first event of 2020.

While the initial focus has been on circuit racing, the FIM already has plans to extend the FRHP to offroad disciplines and championships in the next few years.

Under this programme, the FIM grants helmets with a homologation certificate and label, which are a mandatory prerequisite to be entitled to access FIM Circuit Racing competitions.

The helmet properties are evaluated through a test protocol which aims to trigger the development of helmets offering optimal protection for riders.

Optimal protection is understood as providing a minimised risk of skull fracture and multiple forms of brain damage, as well as a measured and controlled mechanical performance of the protective padding and the shell.

To be deemed eligible and obtain said homologation, the helmet must first meet the standards set by the FIM, in addition to the approvals accorded by selected international standards, and must fulfil certain criterion which includes:

  • UNECE 22.05 Type P

  • Snell M 2015

  • JIS T8133 2015 Type 2 Full face

  • Protective lower face cover: not detachable and not moveable

  • One-piece shell

  • Retention system with strap and double D-ring

“As we have made clear, safety and in particular rider safety is one of the main pillars of the FIM moving forward, therefore it is important that we can reinforce this message with actual and real commitment by bringing the FRHP into action,” said FIM president Jorge Viegas.
