Flair for families: Audi A6 Avant gets 600hp as RS6

INGOLSTADT: From family-friendly company car to race-track wannabe: Audi has turned the A6 Avant estate into a 600-horsepower RS6 that can reach top speeds of 305kph.

Launching at the end of the year at a home-market price of at least €117,500 (RM541,000), the RS6 Avant is powered by a four-litre V8 engine that helps this corporate car sprint from 0 to 100kph in 3.6 seconds, the maker says.

Meanwhile the usual speed limit of 250kph has been raised two steps up to 305kph.

With a much more aggressive silhouette and recognisable from behind by chunkier wheel arches and bulging exhaust pipes, it does a good job of covering up its family friendly heritage and is also unusually sporty on paper.

Audi has tried to quench the executive-class engine's thirst for fuel with variable displacement and a 48-volt mild hybrid system, and yet standard consumption is still a heady 11.5 litres. CO2 emissions of 263 g/km will likely also give you a bad conscience.

In addition to the design and drive, Audi has also revised the chassis: air or steel springs ensure greater traction and a tighter driving feel. Audi says there's also a new steering system that can use the rear axle if needed, while a new exhaust system offers a more distinctive sound.
