Ford is first to test an autonomous vehicle at MCity

DETROIT: Ford announced it has become the first automaker to test an autonomous car at the University of Michigan's "simulated urban environment," MCity.

A world first, MCity is a 32-acre fake town designed to recreate urban situations that motorists encounter. The town is part of the University's Mobility Transformation Center.

Ford used MCity to test their Ford Fusion Hybrid Autonomous Research Vehicle, in particular its advanced sensing technology. In its announcement, Ford explained that MCity's "full-scale urban environment provides real-world road scenarios - such as running a red light - that can't be replicated on public roads."

The announcement on Nov 13 marks the first time that an autonomous car has been tested at the site since MCity's opening in July.
