Fuel prices unchanged for now, weekly pricing axed

PETALING JAYA: Fuel prices remain unchanged and will be subsidised when necessary, says the new government.

RON95 petrol will retail at RM2.20 per litre, RON97 will retail at RM2.47 per litre, and diesel will be priced at RM2.18 per litre.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad made the announcement today at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya. "No longer up and down, the present rate will stay. The government will subsidise if there are insufficiencies," he told reporters.

The fuel prices have remained the same since March 22, the ninth week running. The previous government introduced the weekly fuel pricing on March 30 last year.

In another development, the government also announced that the unpopular Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be set at zero percent from June 1.

In a statement, the Finance Ministry said the reduction of the rate from the current 6% to 0% will be implemented nationwide until a further announcement is made. Since GST was implemented in April 2015, RON95 petrol, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas had been on the zero-rated list.
