BERLIN: A superluxury Maybach Coupe ordered by Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi shortly before he was overthrown and killed has gone on sale for more than a million dollars in the Netherlands.

The 612-horsepower car is number four of only eight double-M coupes produced to special order by the now defunct German coachbuilder Xenatec.

The Maybach 57 S Cruisero Coupe has covered just 2,300km and is effectively brand-new, says dealer Auto Leitner in Alkmaar. The car carries a price tag of €961,950 (RM4.7mil) including purchase tax.

Gaddafi paid for the car in 2010 and arranged for it to be shipped to Libya but it is believed the Maybach never left Germany. It was later bought by a collector.

Gaddafi was ousted in 2011 after more than four decades in power. On October 20, 2011, Libyan officials announced that Gaddafi had died near his home town of Sirte, possibly in a gun battle following a Nato aerial attack.

The impressive two-door Maybach is 11cm longer than its arch-rival, the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and features a lower roof than the standard 57 limousine on which it is based. It is finished in desert-style two-tone light brown metallic with white flanks

Along with fancy leather and deep-pile brown carpets, the interior boasts several extras, including heated seats with massage functions, a stereo system, a television and a DVD player. A box between the rear seats is reserved for bottles of champagne.

After poor sales, the Maybach badge was taken over by Daimler and ceased to exist as a separate brand from 2013. British car gazette CAR said Maybach lost around €330,000 (RM1.6mil) on every car it produced.
