Geely Bin Rui — a potential Proton C-segment model — debuts

By THOMAS HUONG | 31 August 2018

CHENGDU: The Geely Bin Rui C-segment sedan has made its official debut at the 2018 Chengdu Motor Show today, and is priced from 79,800 to 110,800 yuan (RM48,000 to RM66,680).

As the Geely Group has a 49.9 per cent stake in Malaysian automaker Proton Holdings Bhd, the Bin Rui might be re-skinned as a future Proton C-segment sedan.

Size-wise, the Bin Rui is 4,680mm long, 1,785mm wide, and 1,460 mm tall with a 2,670mm wheelbase.

It has two powertrain variants.

The first is a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine with DVVT that produces 134hp at 6,000rpm and 205Nm of torque at 2,000 to 3,000rpm mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The 1.0-litre turbocharged Bin Rui has a top speed of 200kph.

The second is a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine with VVT that produces 131hp at 5,200rpm and 215Nm of torque at 2,000 to 4,000rpm mated to a 8-speed CVT. It has a top speed of 190kph.

The Bin Rui units on display at the motor show had black leather upholstery with red stitching, chrome door handles in the cabin, a large touchscreen, electric parking brake with auto hold, and 205/50 R17 tyres.

The Bin Rui was developed using Geely Auto’s new B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) which greatly shortens the vehicle development cycle and improves product quality. BMA based models can be developed with a wheelbase as short as 2,550mm (similar to Proton Persona) or as long as 2,700mm (similar to 2018 Honda Civic).

The BMA will be used to develop future SUVs, sedans, crossovers, wagons, and MPVs (multi purpose vehicles) for Geely.

Multiple powertrain options can be used with BMA, including Geely’s 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged direct injection engines, 1.4-litre turbocharge engine, and hybrid powertrains such as Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), Hybrid Electric (HEV) and Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV).
