PETALING JAYA: The decision to regulate e-hailing services by the Cabinet was a step in the right direction, said ride-sharing company Grab.

In a statement Thursday, the ride-hailing services said the announcement was a testament of the Government's commitment to support and incorporate innovate solutions to resolve the transportation woes in Malaysia.

"We are excited about this news as this validates the role we are playing in providing affordable, comfortable, convenient, and above all, a safer transportation option to the rakyat," said Jaygan Fu, the Country Head of Grab Malaysia.

He said the move would also realise the company’s social mission to improve the transportation industry and the livelihood and working conditions of their drivers, both taxi or GrabCar.

Formerly known as MyTeksi, Grab said it looked forward to working closely with the relevant authorities, especially with the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) to understand the proposed amendments to regulations.

On Wednesday, the Government gave the green light to SPAD to regulate the e-hailing taxi concept by the end of the year. The decision was aimed at revamping the conventional taxi industry and expand transport services by legalising Uber and Grab services.
