PETALING JAYA: Malaysians can buy Tesla cars from parallel importers. But certainly not from GreenTech Malaysia. The government agency has dismissed claims by a local motoring website earlier this week that it has started selling the Model S to the public.

GreenTech said it is only acting as a facilitator for the Tesla Special Programme, which remains restricted to government-linked organisations or government companies. It is not an authorised Tesla agent or distributor, it said.

"GreenTech Malaysia is not in the business of selling Tesla vehicles. As per Tesla’s conventional business model, customers are advised to deal directly with Tesla on the acquisition of the vehicle," it said in a statement issued today.

GreenTech, headed by Ahmad Hadri Haris, introduced the Tesla Special Programme to help develop awareness, understanding and confidence in EV technology as the first step to lay the foundation for a domestic EV market with a long-term target of encouraging Tesla to set up an office in Malaysia.

To recap, the programme is open to government-linked companies for now and may later include multinational corporations and listed companies.

The programme provides two options: lease only and lease-to-own. Qualified applicants can contact GreenTech for further details on the leasing mechanism and benefits.
