BERLIN: A little over 3 seconds to get to 100 kph, 19 seconds to fold down the roof: Porsche's priorities have never been clearer.

Almost two years after the 911 generation update, Porsche has announced it's once again offering its cult car as a convertible with a glass dome.

The new 911 body variant will be offered as the Targa 4 and Targa 4S and will be available on the market in the next few days, the German manufacturer says.

With it, the luxury car maker is bringing back a classic to its current 911 model series and harking back to the first edition of a design icon that has been part of the family since the mid 1960s.

Instead of the usual fabric roof over the entire cabin, the Targa only has a fabric panel over the first row, followed by a massive roll bar that separates the iconic glass dome covering the rear.

Anyone longing for fresh breeze on the road needs to sit tight for a full 19 seconds while the textile part folds under the glass hood so that the driver and front passenger can sit under the open sky.

Due to the complex mechanics involved, this also only works when the car is parked, and unlike in a normal convertible, you won't be able to hit a button to fold down the roof while driving.

But the little racer will quickly make up for any time lost.

According to Porsche, the Targa comes with a three-litre six-cylinder engine and four-wheel drive, optionally with an eight-speed double clutch or, for the same price, as a manual gearbox with seven gears.

In the basic version, the sports car has an output of 385 horses, while the Targa 4S has 450 hp. In the best case, the 2+2-seater thus accelerates from 0 to 100kph in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 304 km/h.

Porsche puts standard consumption at 9.8 litres for the Targa 4 and 9.9 litres for the Targa 4S, corresponding to 223 and 227 g/km CO2.

Prices in Porsche's home marker start at €128,486 for the Targa 4 and €143,956 for the Targa 4S - exactly the same as for the conventional convertible.
