WOLFSBURG: Volkswagen's first all-electric car, the ID, is set to be shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany, which runs from Sept 12 to 22. Pre-orders for the model will start on May 8.

Volkswagen's first all-electric production model will also be the first to be based on the MEB (Modular Elektro Baukasten) platform, which the VW group will also use as a base for other projects, such as the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Seat el-Born. The model is expected to arrive in three versions with varying battery capacities (48, 62 and 84 kWh), providing ranges between 330km and 550km.

The ID will be able to recognise and greet its drivers as they approach the vehicle by flashing its "Matrix" LED headlights. The EV will also be equipped with its own voice-activated assistant which allows the driver to operate its various integrated technologies.

Security-wise, Volkswagen has implemented technologies that will let the ID alert the driver of potential collisions, whether with another vehicle or another road user.

The Volkswagen ID will be a version of the concept of the same name that was shown at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. It was, at the time, the make's first all-electric concept (several have followed suit since), which had the distinction of offering a record-breaking 600-kilometer range and a "lounge-style" interior.

Pre-orders for the Volkswagen ID will start on May 8, 2019, while the car will make its grand debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Delivery dates are set for early 2020. Price-wise, the lower-end versions should retail at about €30,000 (RM140,000), without the environmental bonus.
