TOKYO: SoftBank Corp and Honda R&D Co, Ltd announced today that they are testing 5G technologies to reduce collisions between pedestrians and vehicles.

The trial involved using SoftBank's 5G experimental standalone mobile communication system installed at Honda's Takasu Proving Ground in Hokkaido.

It would work in tandem with a cellular V2X communication system.

The trial would explore and study three scenarios.

> Reducing collisions involving pedestrians who are visible to vehicles

> Reducing collisions involving pedestrians who are not visible to vehicles

> Reducing collisions involving pedestrians by sharing information about areas not visible to vehicles

Standalone 5G combines 5G equipment and 5G base stations, unlike the conventional standalone system that uses 4G equipment and combines it with 5G base stations.

Both companies said the trial is set to wrap up by March next year.
