LOS ANGELES: Honda's high performance track-ready Civic Type-R is officially on sale in the US for USD$33,900 (RM147,500).

It's 2.0-litre direct-injected turbocharged engine produces 306hp at 6,500rpm and 400Nm of torque from 2,500 to 4,500rpm while mated to a six-speed short-shifting manual gearbox that manages power delivery to the front wheels.

A pre-production version of the new Type R claimed the title of the world's fastest production front-wheel-drive (FWD) car on April 7, setting a record lap time of 7mins 43.80 seconds on Germany's legendary Nürburgring Nordschliefe (North Loop) - more than three seconds faster than the previous record.

The Type R possesses a helical limited slip differential hooked up to 245/30ZR20 Continental SportContact 6 high-performance tyres on 20-inch black-finished aluminum wheels.

Keeping speed in check are the front 13.8-inch cross-drilled discs with 4-piston Brembo aluminum calipers and rear 12.0-inch discs with a single-piston caliper.

The Type R chassis features a dual-axis strut front suspension and multi-link rear, front and rear anti-roll bars, Type-R exclusive springs, bushings and damper mountings and a newly designed Adaptive Damper System. that's fed information from the three on-board G Sensors, four suspension storke sensors and a steering angle sensor.

The Adaptive Damper System, along with the dual-pinion variable-ratio electric power steering, drive-by-wire throttle, and brake system, are tied to the Type R's three selectable driving modes of Comfort, Sport and +R.

The throttle ECU also features driver-selectable automatic rev matching with two profiles, one for Comfort and Sport modes and another for +R mode, to assist drivers in making smooth downshifts without the need for 'heel and toe' downshifting.

Additional performance-enhancing Type-R exclusive features include a weight-saving all-aluminium hood (-5.3kg) and the application of structural adhesives to the body for added rigidity, as well as a high-flow exhaust system with three centre-mounted outlets, and an aerodynamic package.

Aerodynamics package consists of a front splitter, side winglets, air-stabilizing vents, large rear wing and roof-mounted vortex generators.

It's also been fitted with an Acoustic windshield, Unibody structural adhesive at key points, Triple door sealing, Advanced Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) countermeasures.

Other conveniences include an electric parking brake, automatic wipers and keyless entry with push-start button and walk-away door locking system, a multi-angle reverse camera with guidelines and an Indirect tyre pressure monitoring system.

Furthermore, LEDs have been used for the daytime running lights, automatic headlights, fog lights, turn signals, taillights and brake lights.

Inside, the cabin gets fitted with a 7.0-inch Display Audio touchscreen with integrated HVAC controls, 7.0-inch Driver Information Interface (DII) with selectable performance content as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for in-vehicle connectivity.

Also fitted is a 12-speaker 540W sound system with Honda's Satellite-Linked Navigation System and Android operating system that's compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto platforms as well as Bluetooth connectivity, Voice Recognition and Honda HD Digital Traffic as standard equipment.

The Type R's red-illuminated meter cluster features a 7.0-inch Drivers Information Interface (DII) that includes a range of selectable real-time information designed to support performance driving.

The system can display throttle and brake application in a graphic percentage format, turbocharger boost pressure, lap time (for use on closed circuits) and shift lights and a G-meter to indicate acceleration, braking and cornering forces.

For safety, the new Type-R comes equipped with active safety features such as vehicle stability assist with traction control, four-channel anti-lock braking system, electronic brake distribution, brake assist and hill start assist.

Lastly, passive safety comes in the form of its advanced compatibility engineering (ACE) body structure and energy-dispersing crash stroke front frame rails and six airbags with rollover sensor.
