KUALA LUMPUR: The Honda HR-V which we test-drove in Thailand recently is now officially launched in Malaysia.

The compact crossover was unveiled here today and comes in three variants, with prices (OTR with insurance) starting at RM99,800.

The locally assembled HR-V is expected to be a key driver of Honda sales in Malaysia and will be another headache that the other Japanese rivals will have to contend with as Honda cars and their strong residuals have traditionally proven to be big attractions among Malaysians.

The HR-V, which is positioned below the larger CR-V,  comes standard with a 1.8-litre engine mated to a continuously variable transmission, and has a power output of 142ps at 6,500rpm and a maximum torque of 172Nm at 4,300rpm. It shares the same engine as the Civic sedan. The facelifted CR-V was just introduced in Malaysia last month.

Like the Jazz, rear seats can be folded in multiple ways and even lowered to offer versatile space.

The interior features three air-cond vents for the front passenger and a "floating" centre console. In addition, the speedometer in the instrument panel is offered with seven adjustable ambient colours.

The top ranging V variant of the HR-V features  six airbags, LED headlamps, 7-inch display, six airbag, multi-angle rearview camera and six speakers.

The crossover is available in a choice of five colours: Ruse black metallic, Alabaster silver metallic, modern steel metallic, Taffeta white, and crystal black pearl.

Prices for the S, E and V variants of the HR-V are RM99,800 , RM108,800  and RM118,800 respectively.

For owners who desire a sportier and more individualistic look, two Utility packages and two Modulo packages are offered from RM1,550.

The HR-V comes with a five-year warranty with unlimited mileage and a service interval of 10,000km.

Honda Malaysia is expecting to sell 700 units a month; it has received 1,500 bookings so far and the waiting period is two to three months.

Honda Malaysia declined to comment on whether a hybrid version would be available in future though the car maker sells it in Japan where the HR-V is known as Vezel.
