CHICAGO: Hyundai revealed a new Rally Edition for its Veloster Coupe during the Chicago Auto Show, which builds on the previous Turbo R-Spec with stiffer suspension, lightweight wheels, sticky tyres and carbon fibre parts to name a few.

A limited run of 1,200 examples of the Rally Edition will be made – all in Matte Blue, and will be made available in the US from May onwards.

Other than its stiffer suspension, the Veloster will also receive a set of Rays 18-inch lightweight wheels wearing 225/40 tyres, faux carbon-fibre aero accents, new distinct badges, floor mats, seats and a B&M Racing sport shifter for its six-speed manual.

The non-turbo Veloster rolls on 17-inch wheels and is powered by a direct-injection Gamma 1.6-litre engine with dual continuously variable valve timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and anti-friction coatings.

The engine outputs 136bhp at 6,300rpm and 167Nm of torque 4,850rpm when paired with a six-speed manual transmission, but with a seven-speed DCT, power ratings drop to 130bhp at 6,300 rpm and 163Nm of torque at 4,850rpm.

The new Veloster models also feature a revised hood without vent accents, a dark grey grille surround, and new audio/navigation system functions that include HD Radio, Apple Siri, and next-generation Blue Link.

Powering the 17-inch front wheels with 215/45 tyres is an all-aluminium 2.0-litre Nu engine with gasoline (petrol) direct injection (GDI) and dual continuously variable valve timing (DCVVT) and a variable induction system (VIS).

While the engine operates at a compression ratio of 11.5:1, producing 170bhp at 6,500rpm and 209Nm of torque, it is mated to a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission with Shiftronic.

The revised hatch with a kerb weight of 1,317kg has a wheelbase of 2,649mm and comes in measuring 4,300mm-long, 1,471mm-tall and 1,781mm-wide.

Its suspension system comprises of MacPherson struts with coil spring and gas shock absorbers up front while the rear uses a lightweight torsion beam with monotube shock absorbers and up rated springs.
