Jaguar inches closer to electric car goal with plug-in E-Pace SUV

LONDON: Jaguar wants to make nothing but electric cars by 2025, and with its latest update to the E-Pace, the British manufacturer is now a small step closer to this goal.

For the first time this small SUV is being offered as a plug-in hybrid, allowing it to drive purely electrically on short distances.

The plug-in is based on a three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor on the rear axle. It is fed by a battery that is supposed to supply enough electricity for up to 55 kilometres of pure electric driving, Jaguar says.

The system power is 309hp and the standard consumption is 2.0 litres (43 g/km CO2). Apart from the purely electric I-Pace, this makes the E-Pace the most frugal Jaguar to date.

There's also a cheaper three-cylinder engine with 160hp available as a mild hybrid, albeit with a bigger environmental footprint and standard values from 6.8 litres (at least 154 g/km).

Jaguar's range also includes the 2.0 litre diesel with 163hp in the entry-level model or 204hp in the more powerful variants as well as the petrol engine (also 2.0 litres) offered with either 200 or 249hp.

In addition to the new engines, Jaguar has also installed a new infotainment system and touched up the design at the front and rear.

However, the designers have refrained from making any radical changes. Because if they are serious about switching to pure electrics, the E-Pace will be finished by 2025 at the latest.
