DETROIT: The biggest change to the Jeep Compass might have already come last year with the arrival of a new plug-in hybrid, but this compact crossover is now also polishing up its interior with a digital upgrade, as well as a new diesel and an exterior facelift.

Four years since the last revisions to the Compass design, the SUV is getting digital instruments and other features as standard, Jeep has announced.

Drivers will be able to control playblack and communication using a new, bigger touchscreen next to the steering wheel and with wireless smartphone integration and voice control.

Like Apple's Siri and Mercedes' MBUX systems, the Jeep's voice control system responds to the command "Hey Jeep." To make it easier to store increasingly large smartphones, Jeep has also created more space in the centre console.

In addition to the new cockpit, Jeep is promising slight touch-ups to the front and rear, installing LED headlights as standard and now also offers Level 2 semi-autonomous driving.

Jeep says it has also revised its 1.6-litre diesel and increased performance by almost 10 per cent to 130 horses, while also reducing consumption by 10 per cent to 5.1 litres (121 g/km CO2).

The 1.3-litre petrol engine with 130hp or 150hp and the two plug-in hybrids remain unchanged with a system output of 190hp or 240hp and an electric range of around 50km.
