KOTA BARU: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has lost RM30mill to car cloning syndicates, estimating that 2,000 cloned cars had been brought in from a neighbouring country.

Department Director General Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said that apart from the loss of revenue to the country, buyers of these cars do not have insurance coverage and are endangering other road users.

"This year alone, a total of 371 cloned cars had been confiscated and two people had been arrested in Kuala Lumpur," he told reporters at a Appreciation ceremony for special operations personnel of JPJ here on Monday.

He added that Terengganu registered the highest number of cloned cars with 166, out of which 88 were the Honda Jazz model

Ismail added that the operations to weed out the syndicate through the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system will be introduced next year whereby foreign cars exceeding five years could be traced if taxes had not been paid.

"JPJ and the Royal Customs and Excise systems would be streamlined by April next year and cloned cars could be detected.," he said.
Ismail also appealed to those who bought cloned cars to surrender it to JPJ as they can be fined up to RM10,000 for possession of forged JPJ documents.
