July vehicle sales up nearly 20% on longer working month, says MAA

KUALA LUMPUR: Passenger and commercial vehicle sales rose 19.5% in July to 50,853 due to the longer working month and the Malaysian Automotive Association expects the sales volume to be maintained in August.

It said today July sales volume rose by 8,327 units from June. However, sales volume fell by 25% from 68,466 units due to the zero-rated Goods and Service Tax in July last year.

Of the 50, 853 units sold in July, 46,189 were passenger vehicles and the remaining 4,664 commercial vehicles.

From January to July, vehicle sales fell by 3% to 347,187 from 358,065 in the previous corresponding period.

MAA said production of vehicles in July declined by 11.3% to 48,912 units from 55,164 units a year ago. Of the 48,912 units, it said 45,748 were passenger vehicles and the remaining 3,164 commercial vehicles.

From January to July, the total production of vehicles were slightly lower at 333,940 compared with 336,111 units a year ago.
