Larry Page-backed Kitty Hawk shows off flying car prototype

SAN FRANCISCO: Silicon valley company Kitty Hawk has announced this week its first prototype of a personal flying car, which will go on sale by the end of 2017.

The Kitty Hawk Flyer is a new, all-electric craft which the company claimed is safe and allows the user to learn how to fly in minutes. The first version was designed to fly over water as the promo clip below shows.

According to Kitty Hawk, the craft is categorised by US authorities as an ultralight and therefore doesn't require a pilot’s licence to operate. It has been tested and is legal to operate in the United States in uncongested areas, it added.

Adding to Kitty Hawk's newsworthiness is the fact that Google co-founder Larry Page is an investor in the company.

“We’ve all had dreams of flying effortlessly. I’m excited that one day very soon I’ll be able to climb onto my Kitty Hawk Flyer for a quick and easy personal flight,” Page told the New York Times.

The price of the single-seater will be announced closer to the launch date. For those who signed up as a Kitty Hawk member for US$100, they will get a US$2,000 discount off the Flyer's price at launch.

Members will also get exclusive behind-the-scenes content about The Flyer and be eligible to attend meet-ups and industry events.
