The incident is said to have occurred at around 10am on Sunday in Bandar Kim Fung in Sandakan.

Police said the case was being investigated for dangerous driving under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

District police said that the man claimed that he was driving in reverse because his vehicle's gearbox had malfunctioned and could only engage the reverse gear.

Police said that driving a car in reverse was dangerous and a threat to public safety.

They advised that those who experience mechanical problems with their vehicles should have it towed to a workshop instead.
