Maserati takes first stab at electric mobility with Ghibli hybrid

MODENA: They might make fast cars, but Maserati is only now crossing the finish line onto electric avenue with its first mild hybrid, the Ghibli saloon which borrows a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine from its sister brand Alfa Romeo

Launching in September, the Ghibli's new engine works with a 48-volt system, an electric compressor instead of a conventional charger and an electric starter-generator.

The starter-generator helps start the car while also allowing for longer idling phases in the start-stop system and recovers more energy during braking, which is why Maserati says this car's fuel consumption is around 20 per cent more efficient than a V6 engine.

There is little change in performance, however, and this 330-horsepower engine can roughly match the 350hp of the six-cylinder counterpart.

Despite losing two cylinders, the promised driving performance is still typical for this segment. The Ghibli accelerates from a standstill to 100kph in 5.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 255kph.

The maker is putting fuel consumption at 8.5 litres (196 g/km CO2).

In addition to the new engine, the four-door model will be getting further updates and a new infotainment system with a larger screen, as well as voice controls. Access to some functions is provided by a special app on the smartphone.

Maserati says the car will have a price of at least €69,400 (RM338,000) in its European home market.
