Mazda begins gearbox production in Thailand

HIROSHIMA: Mazda has announced that production of transmissions has begun at a new Thai plant.

The SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission produced at the Mazda Powertrain Manufacturing (Thailand) Co, Ltd in Chonburi province is one of Mazda’s new SKYACTIV Technologies that is said to offer driving pleasure and high environmental and safety performance.

Annual production capacity at the Thai plant is expected to be 400,000 units. The new plant, together with an existing plant in Japan, will raise Mazda’s annual production capacity to 1,540,000 units globally.

Transmissions produced in Thailand will be supplied to global production facilities including Auto Alliance (Thailand) to be used in the new Mazda2 (Mazda Demio in Japan), Mazda3 (Mazda Axela) and CX-5.

Mazda expects SKYACTIV models to account for over 85% of sales by fiscal year ending March 2016.
