COLOGNE: Mazda has been selling the current second generation of the CX-5 since 2017. With the latest model update, the Japanese manufacturer wants to keep the SUV fresh and frugal.

The off-roader is returning to Europe and other markets in February with an expanded interior and more efficient engines.

According to Mazda, one of the most important innovations is the reduction in fuel consumption, while there are still two 2.2-litre diesels (150 or 184 horsepower), a 2.0-litre petrol engine (165 hp) and a 2.5-litre petrol engine (194hp).

By reducing internal friction in the all-wheel drive and optimising combustion, the engineers claim to have significantly increased efficiency and to have improved the standard values by up to 0.6 litres.

The most fuel-efficient diesel now achieves a consumption rate of 5.6 litres/100km (147 g/km CO2). Mazda reports 6.8 litres (154 g/km) for the best petrol engine. For the first time, the more powerful diesel can also be ordered as a front-wheel drive model.

Other improvements include an optimised infotainment system with a large screen (10.25 inches) on the centre console. This now also shows a panoramic view when you're manoeuvring.

In addition, the standard equipment will in future also include digital radio (DAB+) and an alarm system with interior monitoring. The previous four equipment lines are supplemented by the special Homura model.
