Meet BMW Factory's new 40-ton e-Truck

MUNICH: BMW became the first automobile manufacturer in Germany to use an electric truck of this size for use on public roads.

BMW, together with logistics partner SCHERM Group, will deploy its 40-ton pure electric truck in the city sometime in the third quarter of this year for just-in-time material transport over short distances.

The electric truck (e-Truck) is essentially a Terberg Type YT202-EV, which will drive almost two kilometres per way from the logistics company SCHERM Group to the BMW Group Plant Munich, eight times a day.

With its all-electric drive train, the quiet truck is CO2-free in traffic and generates virtually no particle pollution for the environment via its 138kW electric motor which which puts power to the rear wheels via an Allison 3000 transmission.

Additionally, the e-truck is able to handle a maximum payload of 65 tons at a top speed of about 20kph.

But, according to BMW, the environmentally friendly truck will generate 11.8 tons less of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to a BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics driving almost three times around the world.

The BMW Group and SCHERM Group are not indicating exactly how much of an investment they are pouring into this pilot project, except that it’s in the six-figure amount over the next year.

If the e-truck proves itself in everyday driving conditions, both partners will seek to expand the project.
