AFFALTERBACH: Mercedes-AMG has officially reset the lap record street-legal "sports car" category of fully standard. unmodified models with its high-powered GT Black Series.

The deed was done at the infamous 20.832km track of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife with 35-year-old professional racecar driver Maro Engel at the helm who managed to achieve a total time of 6:48.047 minutes.

The lap time was recorded by "wige SOLUTIONS” - an independent notary also certified the condition of the vehicle as well as the measurements.

The GT Black Series has a 4.0-litre (3,982cc) twin-turbo V8 engine producing 730hp from 6,700 to 6,900rpm as well as 800Nm of torque from 2,000 to 6,000rpm.

Power gets sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed AMG Speedshift Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) 7G allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 3.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 325kph.

Other than the GT Black Series' outrageous power figures, it also has plenty of aero bits to help keep it grounded while the adjustable suspension system helped the car deal with high levels of lateral forces.

At the front, the carbon fibre front splitter was extended to "Race" position and the lower and upper wing blades of the rear spoiler were each adjusted to the middle position.

The AMG coil-over suspension with adaptive adjustable damping was lowered by 5mm (front) and 3m (rear) to enhance the venturi effect of the front diffuser.

Camber for the wheels were adjusted to the maximum of -3.8 degrees (front) and -3.0 degrees (rear).

Engel set the adjustable anti-roll bars to the hardest of the three settings before setting the nine-stage AMG traction control between positions six and seven - depending on the section of the track.

Next, he opted for the "soft compound" of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tyres - which is part of the GT Black Series' list of standard equipment.

These tyres were specially developed in collaboration with Michelin for the AMG GT series.

For safety, reliance was placed on the AMG ceramic high-performance brake system for stopping power and the Track Package that comes with a roll-over protection system and four-point safety belts.

Engel said that he was able to achieve up to 270kph in the Kesselchen section of the track and well over 300kph on the long Döttinger Höhe straight - pointing out that it was significantly faster than his GT3 racecar.

The GT Black Series comes fitted as standard with a carbon-fibre hood with two large exhaust outlets which helps to pull the heat from the slanted radiator from the engine bay.

Doing so helps to create additional downforce that adds to the efforts of the rear wing, largely enclosed underbody and front splitter.
