STUTTGART: Mercedes-Benz will be unleashing six variants of its latest A-Class sedans upon Europe with prices starting from 30,916 euros (RM148,200).

The latest A-Class sedan will have three engine options of two petrols and diesel.

At the entry-level is the A200, which will come with a choice of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) for Europe.

Regardless of choice, both transmissions will be mated to a 1.3-litre (1,332cc) turbocharged engine pushing 163hp at 5,500rpm and 250Nm of torque from 1,620rpm onwards.

This allows the A200 to sprint from 0-100kph in 8.3 (8.1 - DCT) seconds before reaching a top speed of 230kph.

The A200 with DCT will cost 2094.40 euros more at 33,010.60 euros (RM158,241).

Moving up the ladder is the A220 4MATIC (all-wheel drive) costing 36,431.85 euros (RM174,640) and from this point onwards, the DCT will take over power management duties from here on out.

A familiar 2.0-litre (1,991cc) turbocharged engine will punch out 190hp at 5,800rpm and 300Nm of torque from 1,600rpm onwards to drop its 0-100kph sprint time down to 7.0 seconds before reaching a top speed of 237kph.

At 37,324.35 euros (RM178,919) comes the A250 and the 2.0-litre engine gets tuned to 224hp at 5,800rpm and 350Nm from 1,800rpm, which shortens its 0-100kph sprint time down to 6.3 seconds and ups its top speed to 250kph.

A 4MATIC variant is also available, costing 2,201.50 euros more at 39,525.85 euros (RM189,473).

Last on the list is the lone diesel unit - the A 180 d, costing 32,141.90 euros (RM154,077) and sporting a 1.5-litre (1,461cc) turbo-diesel engine producing 116hp at 4,000rpm and 260Nm of torque from 1,750 to 2,750rpm.

For the first time, the A-Class will be able to drive semi-autonomously in certain driving situations. It will also be fitted with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist.

The optional Driving Assistance package includes Active Distance Control DISTRONIC with route-based speed adjustment, Active Steering Assist with Active Lane Change Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and PRE-SAFE PLUS to detect an imminent rear-end collision.

If the danger of a collision persists, the system can lock the brakes of the stationary vehicle before a rear-end collision to prevent it from being shunted forward by the impact and minimise the risk of injury by reducing the forward jolt caused by the impact.

Further PRE-SAFE® functions are included in the Driving Assistance package, but are also separately available in the PRE-SAFE system.

The PRE‑SAFE system makes use of the time before an impending accident and can include the innovative PRE-SAFE Sound system, which prepares the occupants' hearing for the expected noise of an impact when there is a risk of a collision.

When the danger of a collision is detected, the system causes the on-board sound system to emit a short rushing sound which can activate a tiny muscle in the human ear to contract it as a reflex when loud noises occur, thus protecting the hearing.

The optional head-up display projects important information onto the windscreen to reduce the degree to which the driver is distracted from what is happening on the road. There is also less eye fatigue for the driver, as the eyes do not constantly have to refocus between close-up and long-distance vision.

Entertainment will come from the all-new MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) multimedia system that features an ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence.

MBUX can be customised if desired and adapts to the user and as a further option, it features intelligent voice control which is activated by saying "Hey Mercedes".

The MBUX functions are modular in structure, so that the precise needs of different customers and markets can be met.

The standard package includes two 7.0-inch displays for the instrument cluster and media display with touchscreen, multifunction sports steering wheel with Touch Control buttons on left and right, USB ports (type C), and Bluetooth connectivity.

Extending the MBUX functions (including intelligent voice control with "Hey Mercedes"), is navigation with a pre-installation for Live Traffic Information and touchpad.

The Premium Navigation package means that the cabin gets a larger 10.25-inch instrument cluster, 10.25-inch media display, extended MBUX functions, navigation, pre-installation for Live Traffic Information, touchpad and Traffic Sign Assist.

Breaking the norm is the MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation, which is a completely new function in which the map display is enhanced by augmented reality.

A video image of the surroundings taken with the aid of the front camera is augmented with helpful navigation information where arrows or house numbers are automatically superimposed directly onto the touchscreen of the media display.

The Mercedes me app collection can be placed as an icon on the screen and can be freely sorted on the homepage like all other main applications.

The services are grouped into equipment packages. Available are the Connectivity package Navigation, which includes Live Traffic including Car-to-X communication, map updates at the dealership or over-the-air and the extended navigation services such as car park information, filling station prices) and the Connectivity package Navigation and Comfort with additional in-car office function and pre-installation for Concierge Service.

The ultimate in listening pleasure is provided by the Burmester surround sound system that can be specifically optimised for the front and rear seats

There will be 64 colours options available for the optional ambience lighting system that's in combination with the Style, Progressive or AMG line of equipment.

If required, the colour worlds adapt to suit the different styles of the Widescreen display.

Other options include heated front seats as well as ventilated and Multicontour front Seat package that includes massage function.

Standard for all A-Class variants is DYNAMIC SELECT, which includes four driving modes of Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual to change adaptive damping suspension.

The optional Business package includes Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC, front seat heating, extended MBUX functions, hard-disc navigation, pre-installation for Live Traffic Information and a touchpad.

The package can be further extended by adding a 360-degree camera to the Parking package as well as a optional panoramic sliding sunroof.

An Edition 1 of the A-Class Saloon will be available about a year after market launch.

For both the exterior and interior, the exclusive special model comes with numerous colour highlights that includes copper for the pins of the diamond radiator grille.

Furthermore, the Edition 1 will be fitted with 19-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in copper and with a high-sheen finish.

Additional standard features will include LED High Performance headlights, sport seats with adjustable head restraints and ambient lighting.

The Edition 1 will be made available in all engine variants and selected paint finishes.
