Mercedes-Benz applies for new nomenclature trademarks

OTTAWA (Canada): German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz, is looking to rename a few of its models for its production and AMG-performance models with the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Historically, the company has maintained naming its models with two digits for its Mercedes-AMG performance models and three digits for its Mercedes-Benz production vehicles.

An autoguide.com report said the company has filed for new trademarks in Canada for its production models - all of which now have two digits and ends with a zero (0), and includes the A 40, CLA 40, SLC 40, SLC 50 and GLE 50, while the CLA 50 nameplate has been applied for in Germany and other parts of the world

With the new trademarks, it may seem as though the production models will be joining the ranks of the AMG range.

Instead, the company has also gone ahead and applied for new trademarks for them as well, which will have the number three (3) for its last digit as part of its two-digit classification, and includes the CLA 53, G73 and S73 (the new range-topper).

With regards to the '73' designation, rumours on the interweb indicate that this particular number will be fitted on to the carmaker's 805hp electrified 4.0-litre V8 hybrid-performance model.

Last but not least, the 'Turbo 48' nameplate is also being reserved - much like the old 'Kompressor' or recent 'Biturbo' badgery, and should find its way on to its turbocharged and 48V hybrids soon.
