Mercedes' new S-Class can literally massage you 10 different ways

STUTTGART: Mercedes has unveiled the latest edition of its most prized car, a new S-Class that sees the luxury sedan yet again growing in size and its range of digital features.

To allow for more legroom and luggage, the car's wheelbase has been stretched by 7 cm, while it's also 5 cm longer.

With sales set to start at the turn of the year, the sedan will still be offered in two lengths of 5.18 and 5.29 metres and will be slightly lighter than its predecessor.

Because air resistance has also been reduced and the engines are more efficient, thanks in part to mild hybrid technology, Mercedes is promising significantly reduced fuel consumption.

The most efficient S-Class will achieve frugal fuel consumption numbers of 6.6 litres for diesel (163 g/km CO2) and 7.8 litres for petrol (178 g/km). Even more efficient will be the plug-in hybrid, which will be offered a few months later and will have an electric range of 100km.

In the first few months, the S-Class will initially be available as the S 350d with a 3.0-litre diesel with 286 hp, as the 400d with the same engine but with 330 hp and with a six-cylinder, 3.0-litre petrol engine, which will increase to 367 hp in the S 450 and 435 hp in the S 500.

All four engines allow a top speed of 250kph and are offered with four-wheel drive, although you have to pay extra for this in the weaker diesel.

Among the most important innovations in the luxury saloon is Mercedes' next-generation MBUX infotainment system with a new display design, a digital 3D cockpit, a huge head-up display and a smarter digital assistant.

Say you want to adjust a mirror: The car's system can now tell which mirror you're looking at and will activate the corresponding switch.

The rear axle steering system allows steering angles of up to 10 degrees, giving the S-Class the feel of the A-Class when manoeuvring.

In addition, Mercedes promises new levels of luxury and safety, including 10 massage programs, a sound system with seat vibration and a front airbag for rear seat passengers.

And we haven't even got to the autonomous driving function yet. If your local laws allow it, you'll be able to take your hands off the wheel on certain roads at speeds up to 60kph.

In practice, this means you'll be able to send emails and answer messages when you're stuck in traffic jams. In the car's home market in Germany, this function will be available in the second half of 2021 at the earliest.

Mercedes is also promising at least one souped-up AMG version and a stretched Maybach, which will again be available as a roaring 12-pot beast.

But the model range will not be quite as broad as it has been recently, and as things stand at present, there's no plans for a coupe or convertible.
