MINI Countryman gets a makeover

FRANKFURT: The Countryman is the maxi to the MINI, so to speak. The British BMW subsidiary has now freshened up its biggest car and is now launching the small SUV to buyers in Europe and elsewhere. What's new in the plus-sized MINI?

Alongside a retouched design and an updated range of engines, there's expanded equipment, including a new steering wheel and an optional large screen.

The almost 4.30-metre-long five-door model can now be recognised from the outside by a new front with standard LED headlights highlighted by a dark ring that vaguely evokes eyeliner. Meanwhile on the back there's the trademark rear lights bearing the Union Jack.

The new Countryman is powered by a three or four-cylinder engine, with the range including three options designed for petrol and three for diesel. According to the manufacturer, they run from 102 to 190 horsepower.

The most powerful engine is a plug-in hybrid with a 125-hp petrol engine at the front and a 95-hp electric motor at the rear axle, as well as a 10-kWh battery in the car floor.

With a combined output of 220hp, this MINI achieves a top electric speed of 135kph and an electric-only radius of up to 61km. With both engine and electric motor working together, the two engines accelerate the car from 0 to 100kph in 6.8 seconds and then up to 196kph.

MINI puts consumption at 1.7 litres (40 g/km CO2).
