FRANKFURT: The next big innovation is still a long time coming for MINIs, but the retro runabouts are trying to keep their look fresh with a facelift for the three- and five-door models, as well as the convertible.

The modern take on a cult classic won't be getting any new horsepower options, and engines are staying the same. Instead, the BMW subsidiary says it's focusing on updating the design, while expanding equipment and modernising the displays and assistance systems.

According to MINI, the new models can be recognised by a retouched front, a modified rear apron and LED lights all around that will be standard in future. The trademark British flag on the rear lights is now also standard.

For the non-convertible models, a so-called multitone roof can now be ordered, in which different colours blend into each other.

Inside, according to MINI, there are new steering wheels, which can now also be heated, and a modernised cockpit with a large digital display from the electric version. For the first time there's also the option of an electric parking brake and fancy ambient lighting.

MINI has also improved the assistance systems and are now offering automatic stop-and-go traffic and lane warning assistants.

3door

Under the bonnet, choices remain unchanged with the three- and four-cylinder petrol engines still bringing a range of 75 to 231 horsepower. There's also an electric MINI, which is only available as a three-door model with 184hp and a range of up to 234km.
