Mon Ami: Citroen's new 8-hp electric arrives by post in a parcel

PARIS: Some 70 years after Citroen made mobility affordable with a nifty little car called the 2 CV, the French maker now wants to start another small revolution with a budget two-seater electric you can order online for delivery by mail.

The electric Ami is launching in the first quarter of 2021 at a low price of around €7,000 (around RM35,000) in Citroen's home market in Europe, the maker say.

To make it even more inviting to younger buyers, the car is designed to slot into the moped category of driver's licence, meaning drivers at the age of 16 will be able to use it in many countries.

With a boxy shape, plastic parts and a design where you can't quite tell where front or back is, the Ami measures just 2.41 metres in length and 1.39 metres in width, taking up even less parking space than a Smart car.

With a tiny turning circle of 7.20 metres, it's also very handy at manoeuvring through tight urban spots and parking spaces.

At the same time, it still manages to offer ample space for two people to get in through asymmetrically hinged doors: On the passenger side, it opens the normal way, while the door on the driver side is hinged on the opposite side.

There is no separate boot, however, so you won't be going on any road trips with this car. Weighing just under 500kg, the Ami is powered by an electric motor with just 8hp - yes you read that right. This allows for a top speed of 45kph, hence the moped driver's licence category.

Taking its power from a 5.5-kWh battery, it can cover up to 75km, which translates to roughly two hours of driving at higher speeds. After that, it needs three hours at a household socket to charge up again.

The most unusual part of this car is how it's sold: Citroen is only selling it online and in a few shops. Once you've the car to your "cart" and paid for it, it will arrive at your home (or your nearest dealership) in a large parcel.

If you want extra features, Citroen is offering a handful which can be delivered together in packages for self-assembly.
