Motorcycle licence fees reduced

PUTRAJAYA: The fees to obtain a motorcycle licence will be reduced to tackle the scourge of those who ride without licences.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the fee would be dropped from RM350 to RM299 beginning this month.

“We found that as many as three in ten youngsters were still riding without a licence,” he said.

“Such an act is serious and unacceptable,” he said, adding that road safety was still a major issue in the country.

Liow said driving schools had already agreed to the reduction, which will take effect when the MyLesen programme is launched on the 15th of this month.

With this, Liow urged those riding without a licence to get one before the enforcement agencies came down hard on them.

Liow was speaking to reporters yesterday after the closing ceremony of a nationwide programme that saw some 5,000 members of the voluntary 1JPJ Young Squad riding around the country in stages to share the Merdeka joy with the less fortunate. The ceremony was closed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Liow also said the Automated Enforcement System was currently being reviewed, and it could possibly be revived by year’s end or early next year.

He said as per initial discussions with the Home Ministry, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) would handle the static cameras, while the police would take charge of the mobile ones.

“We are still conducting an in-depth study of the system to enhance its effectiveness,” he said, adding that the people needed to know the importance of having the system as it could effectively reduce accidents.

Liow also said that the JPJ online services would be extended to Sabah and Sarawak this month.
