BERLIN: Motorcyclists are well served by keeping not only their bikes but also their own bodies in good shape.
That's because a higher level of fitness means a higher level of safety, explains a German motorcycle safety institute - and simple everyday exercises with your own body weight such as push-ups, squats or sit-ups can usually do the trick.
"Your arms should not be worn out while riding a motorcycle, so strong triceps are important," says Andre Vallese from the safety institute. These muscles can be strengthened through push-ups.
"Beginners can also start on their knees at the beginning," says Vallese, rather than a full push-up with straightened legs. Alternatively, you can sit down with your back in front of the couch and push yourself up with your arms, also known as a tricep dip.
To strengthen the forearm muscles, bikers can knead a tennis ball. Meanwhile, taking a book in each hand and then letting your arms circle at about head height is a good way to strengthen your shoulders.
"Calmly repeat the exercises in three sets until you can’t anymore," says Vallese. "But don't go overboard."
In-shape bikers have improved body tension while driving, and can thus react faster, while staying more relaxed and attentive.
