New BMW Z4 breaks cover at Pebble Beach — as expected

By CARSIFU | 24 August 2018

SAN FRANCISCO: As predicted, BMW has taken the wraps off its Z4 roadster at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California on Thursday, the same place the Concept Z4 was unveiled last year.

The G29 Z4 introduced took the form of the Z4 M40i First Edition. Not all details of the car are forthcoming at this time. BMW said it will release the full details of further engine variants, technical innovations and the diverse equipment features of the two-seater on Sept 19.

The Z4 M40i First Edition is fitted with a straight six engine that doles up 340hp that's good for a 4.6s sprint from 0-100kph. It gets sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport braking system and an electronically controlled M Sport differential in the rear axle transmission.

The world premiere at Pebble Beach, some 200km south of here, will be followed shortly by its appearance at the Oct 4-14 Paris Motor Show. It will go on sale worldwide in the spring of 2019.

As a First Edition, the car offers specific design and equipment features that add exclusive accents to the car’s sporty flair. For a start, the limited special edition gets a special paintwork called Frozen Orange metallic. It's complemented with an electrically operated textile soft top in anthracite with silver effect, the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, black exterior mirror caps and 19-inch light alloy wheels boasting a bicolour, double spoke design.

The interior of the edition model comprises the Vernasca black leather trim with decorative stitching, electrically adjustable seats with memory function, the option ambient light and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System. Adaptive LED headlights with matrix function for the high beam, BMW Head-Up Display featured for the first time in a roadster and the BMW Live Cockpit Professional offering the latest networking technology.

Vertically aligned headlights, the BMW kidney grille sporting a mesh design, the bonnet stretching sports car-like over the wheels, large air breathers on the front wheel arches and the distinctive spoiler integrated into the rear lid all contribute towards the distinctive look of the Z4.

The interior design also emphasised sportiness. The driver-oriented cockpit styling is underscored by dynamic forward-oriented lines. Likewise, the clearly structured arrangement of all control elements enhances the focus on the driving experience.

The third-generation BMW roadster is being jointly developed with the new Toyota Supra to cut costs, so both sports cars will share components.
