PRAGUE: Volkswagen's Czech subsidiary Skoda is getting a new boss after less than two years: the VW core brand's head of sales, Klaus Zellmer, is moving to Skoda headquarters Mlada Boleslav near here on July 1, the carmaker announced earlier this week.

Skoda has been part of the Volkswagen Group since 1991 and produces, among other things, the Octavia mid-size car, the Karoq compact SUV and the Enyaq iV electric car.

Zellmer will succeed Thomas Schäfer, who is to take over as chief executive of the Volkswagen passenger cars brand.

Ralf Brandstätter will continue to serve as Volkswagen brand boss until June 30, and then take responsibility for the board's China division.

Zellmer, 54, began his career at Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer Porsche, where he was responsible for the North American business before joining VW.

One of the key challenges for Zellmer at Skoda will be coping with the suspension of the VW Group's Russian business due to the Ukraine conflict.

Russia was Skoda's second most important sales market in 2021 with 90,400 vehicles delivered.

The most important market was Germany with 136,800 vehicles.

Worldwide, Skoda delivered 878,200 vehicles last year.
