MODENA: The first prototype of the new Maserati GranTurismo was driven out of the Maserati Innovation Lab and was photographed on the streets of Modena recently.

The new GranTurismo will be the brand's first car to adopt a 100% electric solution.

But customers will still be able to buy it with a combustion engine variant. That version is believed to use the Nettuno twin-turbo V6 mill that's found in the MC20 mid-engined sports car.

The V6 produces 621hp and 729Nm of torque in the MC20 and power is sent to the wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. An all-electric MC20 is also in the works.

Several units of the GranTurismo prototype are currently undergoing a period of intensive road and circuit testing, in various conditions of use, to acquire vital data for the preparation of the final setup.

Market launch is expected in the later part of this year.
